Rustenburg - Six North West police officers accused of robbery will know this week if they will be granted bail.

They appeared in two different courts for two different cases on Monday, a Sapa correspondent reported on Tuesday.

In the first case, four officers from the Tlhabane detective unit, in Rustenburg, were not asked to plead to charges of robbery and extortion in the Tlhabane Magistrate’s Court.

Warrant Officer David Setshedi, 52, Constable Joseph Moremi, 31, Constable Gladness Mogotsi, 35, and Constable Anna Mosweu, 33, were arrested last Tuesday for allegedly robbing and threatening an Ethiopian man in Karlin Park, Zinnaville, on December 7.

“Their lawyers made final arguments for bail application. They are expected back in court on Thursday for judgment,” said Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone.

He said the Ethiopian was allegedly robbed of R10 000 after refusing to pay a bribe.

He reported the matter to the police, but another Ethiopian told him that if he dropped the case, he would get his money back.

He got the money back and was told to leave Rustenburg.

“We have information that other police members who were handling the case were also threatened,” Mokgwabone said.

In a separate matter, Sergeant Faith Mekgoe, 40, and Constable Jacob Monnapula, 32, of the Rustenburg crime intelligence unit, appeared in the Rustenburg Magistrate's Court.

They were not asked to plead to charges of robbery and would remain in custody until Wednesday pending a finding in their bail application.

According to Mokgwabone, the two were arrested after a 33-year-old Ethiopian was robbed of cigarettes worth about R100 000 and an undisclosed amount of cash at a block of flats in Rustenburg on December 13.
