Twenty-one people were arrested for allegedly setting a councillor's house on fire in Tubatse, Limpopo, on Friday, police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said the “rampaging people” were upset about the candidate list for their municipality.

They went to the councillor's home at Taung village and allegedly set it alight around 9am. The house was gutted and the damage estimated at R400,000.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Amon Mashigo has warned those protesting to do so without resorting to violence, and to refrain from damaging property.

Those arrested would appear in court soon.

Many provinces have seen protests over candidates for councillors ahead of local government elections next month. -
