A man was arrested after an Ekurhuleni councillor's house was burnt down in Langaville, Tsakane, on Tuesday morning, municipal spokesman Zweli Dlamini said.

Local residents torched Mthumeleni Nditha's house while he was taking his child to school around 7am. His 18-year-old daughter was home at the time.

“The community apparently decided on this action at the weekend as an act of showing their seriousness to their demands for housing in the area,” Dlamini said.

His daughter escaped unhurt.

“They lost everything.”

Other residents prevented Nditha from being attacked when he returned home. Alternative accommodation was arranged for the family.

Dlamini said security was beefed up for councillors living in Langaville, neighbouring Tsakane, KwaThema, and Duduza.

“This whole thing is ridiculous. Lives of innocent people were put at risk here and those behind the whole act must be rounded up and put behind bars.” - Sapa
