A Randfontein couple has been ambushed on Johannesburg's Golden Highway, according to a newspaper report on Thursday.

Pierre and Marietjie le Clus were travelling to Mozambique on Wednesday, but had to pull over when one of their tyres was damaged by one of several large rocks barricading the road, Beeld reported.

When Pierre le Clus got out to change the wheel, two men attacked him, beating him over the head with a rock and his own wheel spanner.

His wife locked herself in the car and unsuccessfully tried to call the police.

The attackers fled when a passing security vehicle stopped to investigate.

Pierre le Clus was taken to hospital where he received stitches to his head. He was later discharged. - Sapa
