Johannesburg - A couple appeared in the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crimes Court for fraud amounting to R1.1 million, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks, said on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu said Mathakha David Madzivhandila, 40, and his wife Hilda Lutendo Madzivhandila, 36, were granted R5 000 bail each on Monday.

The couple were arrested on Monday morning. “The couple allegedly approached the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and applied for funding to develop their business. They provided the institution with fraudulent documents which left the IDC suffering a loss of R1.1 million,” Mulamu said.

“The duo would also source quotations from suppliers and service providers and alter the quoted amount to be claimed from IDC.”

Mulamu said the case was postponed to September 15.
