Durban - The manager of the Pietermaritzburg High Court found himself on the wrong side of the dock when he appeared in the city’s magistrate’s court on charges of theft on Tuesday.

According to the charge sheet, Bhekumuzi Mtshali, stole a tow eye cover off a BMW parked at the Liberty Midlands Mall belonging to Rajeev Soorajbally at the weekend.

Mtshali was arrested on Monday, and found in possession of the tow eye cover.

The Daily News established that CCTV footage from the mall parking lot forms part of the case against Mtshali, and shows the court manager allegedly waiting to deliberately park his vehicle next to Soorajbally’s BMW, and then removing the tow eye cover and placing it on his own car.

The cover in the bumper for BMWs is specifically colour-coded to the car and costs about R1 000.

Mtshali, who is married with three children and earns R25 000 a month, appeared stoic in the dock, and indicated he intended pleading guilty.

Mtshali was granted bail of R500.

The case was adjourned to Friday for a possible guilty plea.

A court source close to the investigation told the Daily News that Mtshali would be reported to the Department of Justice and an internal inquiry regarding his conduct would follow.

“It will be in his best interests to resign,” the source said.
