Court orderly in dock for smuggling drugs to prisoners

Cape Town – A police court orderly accused of smuggling drugs to prisoners in a court’s holding cells, has been released on R5 000 bail.

Sergeant Jeremia McKails, 39, a court orderly at the Bellville District Court, was arrested on Wednesday, and appeared in court the same day, before magistrate Ronald Rieckerts.

Prosecutor Stefans Venter told the court that the State would not oppose the sergeant’s release on bail, and suggested the amount of R5 000, which was paid.

According to police spokesman Colonel Andre Traut, the Anti-corruption Unit received information that a court orderly at the Bellville court was smuggling drugs to prisoners in the holding cells.

It is alleged that the sergeant was observed placing a bag against a wall at the Bellville District Court.

Police searched the bag and in it found 50 Mandrax tablets, three packets containing the drug tik, a quantity of dagga, two cellphones and three batteries.

According to court papers, McKails is charged with dealing in drugs.

He was warned to appear again on August 4.
