Cape Town - In a bid to retrace Anene Booysen’s last movements, the Swellendam Circuit Court visits Bredasdorp on Wednesday to see where she went drinking with friends shortly before she was attacked, raped and left for dead.
Johannes Kana, the man accused of raping and murdering 17-year-old Anene, and witness Chrisna Mentoor, will accompany court officials and Judge Patricia Goliath to Bredasdorp to Kallies pub, where Anene had drinks on the eve of her death on February 2.
Later she was found groaning in pain at a building site nearby, with what appeared to be her intestines between her legs. She died in Tygerberg Hospital later that Saturday.
On Tuesday, Kana, wearing a black and grey hoody with black tracksuit pants, sat with his head bowed in the dock of the Swellendam Circuit Court on the second day of his trial.
Maria Marshall, for the State, asked for the inspection in loco and that Kana and Mentoor accompany the court. When Kana’s counsel, Pieter du Toit, did not object, the judge agreed.
Mentoor, who worked with Kana and had lived with Anene for a year previously, told the court she had been drinking with Kana and friends on the night of Friday, February 1.
Later everyone went to Kallies pub where they saw Anene.
“We called her to sit with us.
“I told Gershwin (one of the friends) to pour her a glass of beer. We all drank and Anene danced at the table.”
Kana had left his cap with her and two other friends left their “tops” when they went to dance.
Mentoor said the entire group left the pub between 2am and 3am on the Saturday morning. “When we got outside Corlia (Olivier, Anene’s foster mother) and a man arrived. She came to fetch Anene to go home, but she didn’t want to leave.
“They argued and then Corlia and the man left.”
Mentoor said Kana was upset because his cap was missing. “He told me I am negligent with his stuff. Anene was standing with a glass of beer in her hand. We all then left. Kana and Anene left together and they walked towards the back of Kallies pub.”
On Monday, the court heard that a glass, a pair of shoes and a navy-blue cap were found at the spot where Anene was found at Asla site B.
In court Mentoor was shown the navy-blue cap which she identified as Kana’s.
On Monday, Kana’s friend, Riaan Scheepers, testified that Kana had told him he had “done it to Anene”, that he was sorry and had asked for forgiveness.
He also identified the navy-blue cap as belonging to Kana.
On Monday, witness Constable Ricardo Murtz told the court that when he arrived at the building site where Anene was found, she was in a lot of pain. There was blood and what looked like intestines between her legs.
