A large crowd gathered outside the Rustenburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday ahead of the sentencing of former mayor Matthew Wolmarans.

He and his former bodyguard Enoch Matshaba were on Monday convicted of the murder of local councillor Moss Phakoe.

Judge Ronnie Hendricks said Wolmarans hired his bodyguard to kill Phakoe. He was shot dead at his home in Rustenburg in March 2009.

On Tuesday, streets near the court were closed to traffic. At the Rustenburg prison heavily armed police tactical unit members were preparing to take the pair to court. – Sapa
