DA visit to rape victim blockedComment on this story
KwaZulu-Natal - DA parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko was prevented from visiting an 82-year-old rape victim in KwaSwayimane, KwaZulu-Natal, The Times reported on Tuesday.
A group of about 25 people carrying rakes, pickaxes, shovels, pangas, and sickles met Mazibuko and her party outside the woman's house on Monday.
They distributed pamphlets that reportedly read: “Go die DA and your money, we don't want your help.”
African National Congress ward councillor Mduduzi Goba described Mazibuko's visit as an insult. A local politician, who is related to the woman, stopped the DA from entering the home.
“The DA was never here when she was raped seven months ago. She was healing and she got stressed and ill again because the DA wanted to score political points,” the relative was quoted as saying.
Mazibuko eventually went to a local police station to lay charges of intimidation and incitement of political violence against the ANC.
The ANC's regional secretary, Supa Zuma, denied party members blocked the Democratic Alliance's visit.
Two elderly women, aged 94 and 82, were raped in the area last year. The 82-year-old's rapist was sentenced to life imprisonment. -Sapa
