Johannesburg - Deaths in police custody or as a result of police action have decreased, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said on Wednesday.
“The Ipid has noted the various incorrect figures of deaths in police custody, and deaths as a result of police action, being bandied about in the media,” said spokesman Moses Dlamini.
“Although the numbers are still unacceptably high, they have come down considerably over the last four years.”
Ipid's annual report indicated that there were 720 fatal incidents in the 2011/12 financial year, said Dlamini.
“This was a decrease of 10 percent compared to 2010/11.”
He said 232 of all fatalities were deaths in police custody, while 488 were as a result of police action. - Sapa
