A policeman accused of kidnapping and extortion will appear in the Germiston Regional Court on Wednesday.
The detective, from Silverton, Pretoria, was arrested on Monday after officers accidentally wounded singer Kuli Chana in a shooting in Midrand.
Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said a case of kidnapping was reported in Bedfordview and the kidnappers demanded a ransom of R100 000 from the abducted businessman’s family.
The family was instructed to leave the ransom money at the Caltex petrol station on the N1 highway in Midrand.
Bedfordview police arrived at the garage, saw Chana's car, and mistook him for a kidnapper.
The Bedfordview businessman was kidnapped after a house robbery, and was later found unharmed in Pretoria.
Dlamini said the policeman accused of the kidnapping was found with a 9mm pistol in his possession.
Chana, whose real name is Khulane Morule, had been discharged from hospital, his publicist Sheila Afari said.
“He is shaken by the shooting as it came out of nowhere and there was no warning from the police whatsoever. He is recovering at home.”
The police officers accused of shooting at Chana were being investigated for attempted murder by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate. - Sapa
