Shrien Dewani’s appeal against his extradition order to South Africa is expected to be heard in Britain in early December.

At the end of last month, British Home Secretary Theresa May signed the extradition order, meaning he would have to return to Cape Town to stand trial for his wife Anni’s November 13 murder in Khayelitsha.

Four days later, Dewani’s lawyers announced they planned to appeal.

According to the Home Office website, South Africa is a category 2 territory in terms of extradition.

The Crown Prosecution Service website says the administrative court must hear the appeal within 76 days of the notice. The date would be December 9.

Meanwhile, posts on the Facebook page “Anni Dewani – What Really Happened”, give details about vigils Anni’s family have planned for November 13, marking a year since her murder.

The vigils are to take place in Cape Town, Sweden, where she grew up, and Britain, where she would have lived after her marriage.

Last week, Anni’s uncle, Ashok Hindocha, said her family did not want her husband to be mentioned at the ceremonies.

South African authorities want Dewani, accused of orchestrating Anni’s murder, to return so that he can stand trial with co-accused Mziwamadoda Qwabe and Xolile Mngeni.

In November, Zola Robert Tongo, who had chauffeured Dewani and Anni while they were honeymooning in Cape Town, confessed to his role in her murder.

Tongo, sentenced to 18 years, said Dewani had offered him R15 000 to have Anni killed and Tongo had then hired Qwabe and Mngeni to kill her. - Cape Times
