Johannesburg - After a lengthy extradition battle, honeymoon murder-accused Shrien Dewani was expected to land in South Africa on Tuesday to face charges linked to the murder of his wife, Anni.
The British Press Association reported that Dewani left the United Kingdom on Monday night for South Africa, where he is expected to make his first appearance at the Western Cape High Court in Cape Town at 11.30am.
The millionaire businessman was flown from Bristol Airport after a protracted legal battle against extradition on the grounds that he has mental health problems.
Scotland Yard said Dewani was taken from Fromeside Hospital in Bristol to the airport accompanied by officers from the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) Extradition Unit, according to the report.
Officers were met at the airport by South African officials who escorted him on the flight to South Africa.
A Home Office spokesman said: “We can confirm that Shrien Dewani was extradited on Monday 7 April from the UK to South Africa.”
Provincial justice head Hishaam Mohamed on Monday said the court would have the final say on whether he was fit to stand trial.
Dewani claimed he and Anni were kidnapped at gunpoint as they drove through Gugulethu in Cape Town in a taxi in November 2010.
The couple had been on honeymoon in the country.
Dewani was released unharmed while his wife's body was found in the abandoned car the next day. She had been shot dead.
Xolile Mngeni was convicted of the murder and jailed for life.
Prosecutors alleged Dewani hired him to kill his wife.
Two other alleged accomplices are also already serving jail terms in connection with the crimes.
