The National Prosecuting Authority has submitted papers for the extradition of British murder-accused Shrien Dewani to the SA Justice Department, SABC news reported on Wednesday.

“The papers that we submitted to the Department of Justice as the central authority, we believe are in order and have all the information that will persuade the court in a subsequent hearing to grant us the extradition,” NPA spokesman Mthunzi Mhaga told the news station.

“We are confident that in a reasonable time, we will have him here as an accused.”

The Justice department is the central authority which deals with extradition. It facilitates the process through diplomatic channels with the International Relations and Cooperation Department.

Shrien Dewani is accused of murdering his wife Anni in a staged hijacking in South Africa.

Anni Dewani was killed on November 13 in Gugulethu, Cape Town.

The “hijackers” - who have been arrested and are to appear in court again in February - released her husband and their driver unharmed, but shot her, and did not steal the car.

The driver of the vehicle the couple were travelling in at the time of the alleged fake hijacking entered a plea agreement with the State and fingered Dewani as the mastermind in the killing.

Dewani was released on 250,000 pounds bail in Britain after his arrest this month. He is set to appear in court again in January. -
