Durban - A Malawian national living at the Chatsworth Displacement camp apparently committed suicide on Monday night by stepping in front of a train.

The man, who cannot be identified as his next of kin have yet to be informed, allegedly stepped on to the train line at Westcliff station, a short distance away from the camp.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident took place just after 6pm on Monday night.

Police are now trying to track down the man's family. It is unclear at this stage if he had been processed by Home Affairs for repatriation or if he was waiting to be reintegrated into the community.

The Chatsworth camp holds around 2 000 displaced foreign nationals.

Temporary tents, toilets and showers have been erected at the camp while volunteers and NGOs manage the distribution of food and supplies.

Chatsworth SAPS confirmed the incident and said an inquest has been opened.
