Johannesburg - Police are hunting for a popular Soweto DJ whose Setswana surname means “that which kills” after his girlfriend was stabbed to death on Sunday.
The Star has reliably learnt the DJ is Jozi FM’s Donald Sebolai, who is wanted for questioning and is on the run after he allegedly repeatedly stabbed his lover, Dolly Marawa, in Jabulani.
Police spokesman warrant officer Kay Makhubela confirmed on Monday morning that the police are looking for “a well-known DJ who works at Jozi FM” but he refused to release the man’s name.
However, a Jozi FM insider, who cannot be named because he is not authorised to speak to the media, confirmed that the wanted man is Sebolai.
Jozi FM station manager Mpho Mhlongo said on Monday morning that he had been in contact with Sebolai on Sunday night trying to convince him to hand himself over.
“He was sobbing... he didn’t sound right at all,” said Mhlongo.
He said they were supposed to meet twice on Sunday but Sebolai cancelled both meetings.
Mhlongo said Sebolai had not given him any more details about the incident or where he was and his phone had been off since last night.
Marawa, who has a six-year-old daughter from a previous relationship, worked as a receptionist at Wits University.
Jozi FM’s 8am news bulletin did not mention the story.
The insider said the station was not reporting on the matter before it had considered legal opinion.
Makhubela said the murder took place at about 6am on Sunday at the couple’s flat, before the man fled in Marawa’s car.
“After he stabbed her, he called her friend to tell her he had killed her and was leaving for Botswana,” Makhubela said.
The white Fiat Palio was found in a park about 2km from the flat.
“His clothing and bottles of beer were scattered in the back,” Makhubela said.
The police found Marawa’s body on her bed after getting the caretaker to open up the flat.
There was anger about the murder on Twitter on Monday morning.
As one user said, she hoped Sebolai “rots in hell”.
Another said she wasn’t surprised he had “finally lived up to his surname”.
Just 13 hours before the alleged murder, Sebolai updated his Facebook profile saying he was filling in for a fellow DJ on Jozi FM.
Sebolai presented the weekday Mid-Morning Chat show, which focuses on women’s issues, on the community radio station based in Dube, Soweto.
At 6.40am on Monday, he was still listed as a DJ on Jozi FM’s website but his picture was not available, unlike the profiles of his colleagues.
Ten minutes later, his profile appeared to have been removed altogether.
According to Jozi FM’s website, Sebolai’s show aimed to “educate, entertain, uplift and inspire mature women to become the best version of themselves”.
