Cape Town - The doctor who was found shot dead opposite a cemetery in Macassar on Friday has been identified as Michael Aluko.

Western Cape police spokesman Andre Traut said his name had previously been withheld until his next of kin in Nigeria had been notified about his death.

Traut said Aluko’s body was found in Zandvlei, Macassar, opposite a cemetery. He had been shot twice.

Police were also investigating whether Aluko had been robbed and hijacked.

Western Cape Health Department spokesman Darren Francis said Aluko practiced as a obstetrician – a specialist in pregnancy, childbirth, and disorders of the reproductive system.

He worked at both the Khayelitsha Hospital and the Khayelitsha Community Health Centre in Site B, rotating shifts for about 10 months, Francis said.

“Aluko was a doctor of the highest calibre. His death comes as a great loss to us. He was hardworking and an all-round nice guy,” he said.

The department would support the investigation.
