Cape Town - A doctor has been found shot dead beside a road in Macassar.

His identity is being withheld until his next of kin in Nigeria have been informed, police spokesman Andre Traut says.

Police were investigating whether the doctor has been hijacked and robbed.

EMS spokesman Darren Francis said the man was a general practitioner at the Khayelitsha Community Health Clinic in Site B.

More details would be released on Monday.

Traut said: “On Friday at about 5am, the body of an adult male was found in Zandvlei, opposite the Macassar cemetery.”

No arrests had been made.

Macassar Community Policing Forum chairman Kassiem Anthony said residents had reported hearing two shots from the Zandvlei area and he had gone out to investigate.

He found a number of people standing around the doctor.

“He had been shot in his back and in his left arm.

“By the time police arrived, the man was dead.”

The adjacent area was notorious for crime.

“The area opposite is covered in dense bush.”
