Pretoria - A doctor was wounded at his home in Amandasig, Pretoria North, during a house robbery, Gauteng police said on Thursday.

The 56-year-old paediatrician was shot on Wednesday morning, Captain Augustinah Selepe said.

“He is in a stable condition in hospital,” said Selepe.

The robbers allegedly stole the doctor's medical equipment and briefcase, as well as his wife's cellphone, handbag, purse, and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Beeld newspaper reported on Thursday that the doctor was shot in the neck, chest, and stomach while he was in bed.

His wife told the Afrikaans daily she was woken up around 3am on Wednesday morning by the sound of glass breaking.

She said the alarm system in the family's home went off but the security company ADT did not react quickly.

“It's strange, the alarm did not go off when the men went past the beams. My two dogs also didn't bark,” she told Beeld.

She believed the robbers managed to turn off the alarm sensors.

The woman and her son, who was also in the house at the time but was unharmed in the robbery, carried the wounded doctor to the car to take him to hospital.

She said when they were outside, an ADT vehicle drove past the house and her son told the security guards that his father had been shot and needed help, but the vehicle drove off.

ADT North managing director Mike Kidson could not immediately be reached for comment but told Beeld the company was doing a “thorough investigation” to determine what happened at the doctor's home.

No arrests had been made and police were unable to confirm how many men robbed the house. - Sapa
