A Durban doctor and his wife, the owners of a property from which an alleged child sex ring was run, are being sought by the Hawks.

Police Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge told The Mercury on Sunday that police had gone to the couple’s flat at Edge of the Sea, in Umhlanga, on Sunday, but they were not there.

He said the investigating team believed the couple, who cannot be named until they appear in court, had fled to Mauritius.

“The court has issued warrants for their arrests. We believe they received monies and worked with criminals that ran the brothel,” said Mdunge.

He said the doctor had a surgery in Phoenix.

“We believe the couple knew what was happening at the building and continued renting it out to the criminals.”

In February the Hawks, joined by several police units, raided a building in Rochester Street in Durban’s Point area, which is known for drugs and prostitution, and rescued 15 girls who were being used as prostitutes.

Eight were under the age of 16, while the youngest was believed to be 12. Two were pregnant.

Mdunge said the girls had been held against their will.

He said that 10 of the children had been reunited with their families.
