Cape Town - Eight children are expected to appear in court for animal cruelty after they set two dogs against each other, and then beat and stoned one before leaving it to drown in a nearby dam.

Recently, a video circulated on social media showing the boys, aged between seven and 17, torturing and dragging a cross-breed stray dog, named Sam, by a nylon rope to a secluded spot in Manenberg.

The boys are heard chanting “you are going to die - to die” repeatedly, before putting it up against a pit bull.

After several failed attempts at getting the pit bull to kill Sam, the boys hanged him from a tree, then lowered and pelted him with rocks and chunks of concrete.

He was the dumped into a dam.

Autopsy results from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) revealed excess fluid on the lungs showing that Sam was still alive when thrown into the water.

“The findings show that the dog in question suffered numerous fractures to its body before death. Injuries present in the skin of the head indicate puncture wounds caused by a large dog bite.

“The front rostral section of the skull was crushed, with haemorrhaging into the sinus and naval cavities. The liver was damaged due to blunt force injuries such as kicking or blows with an object,” the SPCA said.

The boys will appear in court on charges relating to animal cruelty as soon as a date has been set, and the boy who recorded the incident on a cellphone will also appear for doing nothing to stop the cruelty.
