Welkom - A police sniffer dog managed to uncover a stash of dagga worth over R60 000 which had been buried under the concrete floor of a house in Thabong in Welkom in the Free State, police reported on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Mamello Mokhuoane said: “A five-year-old police narcotic dog, Natan, a Dutch Shepherd by breed, sniffed out 10 bags of dagga weighing 43kg, amounting to R63 640 in street value, under a plastered cement floor in house at Lasvegas, Thabong. A 19-year-old woman was arrested by members of the K9 Unit for drug possession.”
Mokhuoane said the Welkom K9 Unit had received information from a community member about a woman who had had a huge amount of dagga delivered some few days ago from the Eastern Cape.
“Five members of the K9 Unit, together with Natan, under the leadership of Warrant David Scott, followed up the information which led them to a house in Lasvegas area,” Mokhuoane said.
“On arrival at the house, Natan, who is trained to sniff out seven types of narcotics, stood next to a pile of potato bags. He continued to sniff around the bags indicating that there was some form of drug in the vicinity.
“The police searched the potato bags found no drugs. They went as far as digging up the cement floor on which the potatoes were placed. After a few minutes of digging, members of the K 9 Unit found a green municipal dustbin full of dagga. The dustbin was buried under the cement floor.”
Mokhuoane said a case of dealing in dagga had been registered at the Thabong SAPS pending further investigation.
The suspect was due to appear in the Welkom Magistrates’ Court on Thursday
