Johannesburg - Three men were arrested on Wednesday afternoon when they were found in possession of suspected stolen goods at a roadblock in Doornkop, south west of Johannesburg, said police.

Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said police found a safe and scores of bullets in the men's Toyota Conquest.

“The bullets are that of an R5, an R1, a revolver and a 9mm gun... We also found a revolver,” he said.

Several banknotes and coins in foreign currencies were also found.

“The money was from Zimbabwe, Botswana and also some American dollars and other notes and coins. I'm not sure how much it is, but it is a lot of money,” said Makhubela.

The men also had several cellphones and jewellery.

“They have admitted to breaking into a house in Roodepoort. We understand there was no one at the house at the time, so the incident had not yet been reported,” said Makhubela.

The men, aged between 22 and 43, had been charged with housebreaking, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of stolen property, and theft.

Makhubela said more charges could be added.

Police were investigating whether the car was stolen.

The men would appear soon in the Protea Magistrate's Court. - Sapa
