Cape Town – The Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) said on Thursday that it was taking action against an official after uncovering a vehicle registration scam.

DTPW spokesperson Byron la Hoe said the official worked in the Transport Administration and Licensing Unit. The alleged corruption was uncovered in August 2016 during a training event at the Gene Louw Traffic College in Brackenfell. La Hoe said a car that was inspected at the event was unroadworthy, yet had been issued with a roadworthy certificate.

"The official and three accomplices have appeared in court on charges of fraud, corruption, money laundering and racketeering", he said. The certificate had been issued in De Aar.

The department has urged members of the public to report corruption and said it will take "decisive action" against officials found guilty of misconduct.
