Double murder shakes sleepy town

Cape Town - Shocked Kommetjie residents are still trying to make sense of the death of a couple found shot dead in their home last week.

On Thursday at around 8.30am, Ocean View police “attended a murder incident” at a house in Clan Monroe Avenue where they found the body of 51-year-old Antonet Hestermann, said provincial police spokesman Captain Frederick van Wyk.

Her body was found on a bed in the bedroom, with gunshot wounds on the right side of her head and chest.

Her husband, 52-year-old Martin Hestermann, was found on the couch with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He was taken to Vincent Pallotti Hospital, where

he was declared dead.

Police found his .38 Special revolver on a chair in the bedroom.

Jonathan Bakker of Komwatch - the neighbourhood watch for the area - said they had responded when reports of the shooting were radioed in, but stood back when police took charge of the incident.

“It was such a huge shock for everyone… shootings never happen in Kommetjie,” he said.

A distraught neighbour who said she was friends with the Hestermanns described them as a lovely couple.

Another neighbour, Laura Hewgill, said she did not hear any shots in the hours before the bodies were found.

Hewgill said the couple had recently organised a get-together for neighbours and friends at their home.

“I’m still trying to wrap my head around what could have happened.”

“Antonet was a very bubbly, friendly person… I’m so shocked.”
