Johannesburg - The driver of an 18-wheeler truck involved in a crash which left five people dead on Tuesday has been arrested, said Johannesburg metro police.
Five people, including a baby, were killed when the vehicles caught fire after the accident in Kibler Park, south of Johannesburg.
Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar of the Johannesburg metro police said the man was charged with five counts of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving.
“He is currently being held at the Mondeor police station,” Minnaar said.
Spokesman for Johannesburg emergency services Robert Mulaudzi said the victims were burnt beyond recognition.
“Seven other people were treated on the scene before being transferred to different hospitals around the city.”
Fire-fighters battled for several hours to contain the blaze.
Mulaudzi said the truck was not carrying flammable goods. - Sapa
