Eastern Cape - A man was shot in the head during an attempted hijacking in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape police said on Thursday.

Warrant Officer Gerda Swart said the 42-year-old man was in a stable condition in hospital after being wounded by the hijackers on Wednesday afternoon.

He was giving four men a lift from KwaNobuhle, when they asked to be taken to the railway station.

“They arrived at the train station… and one of the men informed the driver that they are going to take his vehicle, a VW Golf.”

The man was shot by one of the men when he threw his car keys out of the window onto the pavement. The hijackers ran away.

Police later found a firearm near the scene.
