Johannesburg - A nine-month-old baby born to a drug trafficker in a Brazilian prison was brought to South Africa on Thursday, the social development department said.

“This is the third South African baby in 10 months to be repatriated from Brazil,” spokeswoman Lumka Oliphant said in a statement.

The department was bringing two more babies back from Brazil.

“South Africa is obligated by the Children's Act to repatriate all South African children in distress in foreign countries.”

Oliphant said children born to jailed mothers in Brazil could stay with them up to the age of six months.

Since 2008, 13 children born in various prisons abroad had been brought back by the department.

“The child repatriated today will be placed in the care of relatives.”

Some of the children were placed in foster care and others with relatives.

“The department is guided by the mother of the child as to the placement of the child when back.”

Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini urged women not be lured into trafficking drugs. Information about the mother of the nine-month-old was not immediately available.
