Criminal charges will be laid against an eThekwini ANC branch chairman for allegedly taking money for RDP houses which never materialised, the DA said on Wednesday.
“We will be laying charges of fraud and corruption,” Sydenham councillor Jethro Lefevre said on Wednesday.
The chairman apparently charged residents of Lacey road informal settlement in Sydenham, Durban between R4000 and R8000 for each RDP house.
“The Democratic Alliance was contacted by many residents who had been allegedly ripped off in this scam, and 12 affidavits have been provided,” Lefevre said.
These would be handed to the police on Thursday.
Municipal spokesman Thabo Mofokeng said the allocation of RDP houses was done through the policy guidelines of the municipality.
“The municipality facilitates the process of RDP houses. The allocation cannot be done by anyone outside the municipality, because that would be illegal,” he said.
Mofokeng said the DA was within its rights to lay criminal charges. - Sapa
