Durban - A woman was killed in Durban when she was struck by a stray bullet during a shootout between police and gangsters, police said on Wednesday.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said that incident happened in C-section of Durban’s KwaMashu township on Tuesday night.

“It is alleged that police were chasing a suspicious vehicle and the suspects started to shoot towards the members [of the police]. The members retaliated and the woman was shot.”

The woman was rushed to the KwaMashu Polyclinic.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said that the woman had succumbed to her injuries and was declared dead on arrival at the clinic.

It was not immediately known if any of the suspects were arrested or if any one else was injured.
