East London - An East London magistrate has appeared before one of his colleagues on a rape charge, the Dispatch Online reported on Thursday.
He was temporarily removed from the bench after the charges emerged.
The magistrate, who cannot be named until he has formally pleaded, was released on R1 000 bail.
Chief Magistrate Valerie Gqiba said the magistrate had not been suspended, but a report would be submitted to the Magistrate's Commission regarding the charges against him.
Gqiba said the public did not expect a presiding officer to be on the bench one day and in the dock the next day.
The matter was postponed to January 17 next year. - Sapa
