Rustenburg - More than 1 300 motorists were arrested for various offences during the Easter weekend across the country, traffic authorities said on Monday.

Johannesburg metro police spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said 640 drivers were arrested for drunk driving at roadblocks in Johannesburg between Thursday night and Monday afternoon.

“There were also 53 motorists arrested for speeding, including a man in a Jaguar caught at 180km/h on N1 south Midrand at 10am on Sunday, rushing to a church where he was supposed to be best man,” said Minnaar, adding that the groom was also arrested shortly afterwards in a Proton car at 161km/ h, on N1 south Midrand.

Meanwhile, Traffic Road Management Corporation spokesman Simon Zwane said 700 drivers were arrested for various traffic violations nationally. That brought the number of arrested motorists to 1 393.

Zwane also said 350 cars and 1 000 buses were impounded for being unroadworthy.
