King William’s Town - A 28-year-old child rapist has been sentenced to an effective 18 years behind bars, Eastern Cape police said in a statement on Monday.

Simphiwe Damane raped a five-year-old child on January 4 last year.

Damane lived next door to the child and her mother and met the two at Ngose Locality, Lubomvini Village in Willovale.

Police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said he asked the mother to allow the child to accompany him to a nearby homestead.

“The mother did not suspect anything as the accused used to visit them. The accused took the young girl to an unused house where he raped her. He later released the victim. The victim went home and told her mother what transpired”, Manatha said.

Damane was arrested the day after the rape on January 5, 2015 and has been behind bars ever since.
