Johannesburg - An alleged drug syndicate's members arrested last week have appeared in court, police said on Thursday.

Lt-Gen Solomon Makgale said the State would oppose bail when the men returned to court to make formal bail applications.

Durban club owner Gregory Lyris, 45, and Bulgarian Valari Nikolov, 41, were arrested last Tuesday, allegedly for possession of ecstasy tablets, said, Makgale.

Gareth John Brissett, 40, Sakhile Dlamini, 28, and John Mapumulu, 32, were arrested in a raid on a Westville home the next day for alleged possession of precursor chemicals used to manufacture drugs, he said.

Follow-up investigations led to the discovery of a laboratory equipped with machines, precursor chemicals, drugs and an undisclosed amount of cash on Monday.

Makgale said Lyris and Nikolov would appear in the Middelburg Magistrate's Court on November 24, and Brissett, Dlamini and Mapumulu would appear in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court on December 1.
