Eight at large after armed robbery

Johannesburg - Police were searching on Wednesday for eight men believed to have robbed a supermarket in Alberton, Gauteng police said.

Captain Pinky Tsinyane said the men armed with rifles and pistols entered the Checkers supermarket in the Brackenhurst shopping complex around 7pm on Tuesday.

“The three entrances of the shop was each guarded by two armed men while the remaining two men demanded money from the tills.”

Tsinyane said an undisclosed amount of cash was taken.

“The armed men shot and wounded a man, in his 40s, on their way out of the shopping complex. The man was rushed to a nearby hospital.”

Police received information that the men fled in grey motor vehicle.

No arrests have been made and a case of armed business robbery is being investigated. - Sapa
