Pietermaritzburg police are trying to trace a gang of men who brutally assaulted and then robbed an elderly couple in Hilton on Monday night.

The couple, in their mid-60s, were asleep in their bedroom when the husband heard a noise coming from the lounge.

“Upon investigation, he was confronted by two unknown men wearing balaclavas and socks on their hands. The suspects were armed with a crowbar and a knife,” said police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane.

A short while later, two other men entered the house. It is alleged that the suspect with the crowbar assaulted the husband, hitting him on his head.

The victim was dragged back to his bedroom where he and his wife’s hands were bound with rope and they were made to lie on the floor, face down.

The suspects ransacked the house and took jewellery, a Dell laptop, a brush cutter, two Apple iPhones and wallets containing cash and cards with a total value of about R17 000.

Police have appealed to anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the branch commander, Detective Warrant Officer Johnson Sindane of the SAPS Hilton Detective Services, at 033 845 6526, or at 082 459 7454.
