An elderly couple is facing charges related to the alleged sexual assualt of several children at a creche they have run for 23 years.
The couple from Balfour, Mpumalanga, cannot be named yet as they are yet to plead to the charges.
The man, who is alleged to have sexually assaulted several children, was arrested in November last year, but his wife was arrested on Thursday (21) for allegedly failing to report the incidents.
The number of charges against the man are yet to be confirmed as the charge sheet has not been completed, said Captain Lizzie Koekemoer of the Secunda family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit.
She said as the investigation had continued, police discovered more and more children had been abused and they are still consulting with the families involved.
She said the children at the crèche had told the woman of the sexual offences before her husband was arrested, but she allegedly ignored them and did not report him to the police.
The husband and wife, both 71 years old, will appear in the Secunda Regional Court next month. The man will remain under house arrest in neighbouring Grootvlei until the case is finalised.
The woman was released with instruction to appear in court with her husband.
