Tonga - An Mpumalanga pensioner accused of assaulting a villager with a long, sharp blade, known as a slasher, appeared in the Tonga Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Matapira Samson Madonsela, 77, of Mangweni village in the Ndlovini section near the Swaziland and Mozambican borders, pleaded not guilty to assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

He would go on trial next month, a Sapa correspondent reported.

Madonsela was arrested on February 8 this year after Noah Phesane, 40, also of Mangweni, was assaulted with a slasher.

Magistrate Sibonisiwe Sibuyi extended his R1000 bail and postponed the matter to June 11 for start of trial.
