Johannesburg - An 86-year-old man was killed in a mob justice attack in Rotterdam village, Hlanganani, on Wednesday, Limpopo police said.
The community believed the elderly man was behind the rape and murder of a woman in the village last week, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.
He was stoned before a tyre was placed around his neck and set alight.
“The suspects fled the scene and no arrests have been made yet,” Mulaudzi said.
Limpopo police commissioner Maj-Gen Berning Ntlemeza appointed a specialised task team to investigate the killing.
He urged people with information on the matter to come forward.
