Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape - A 93-year-old woman was attacked and killed while alone in her Port Elizabeth flat, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.

“She stayed in a granny flat at the back of the main house in Walmer. Her domestic worker discovered her body on Monday morning,” said Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg.

The woman was identified as Marjory Uren. She had been repeatedly struck on the head with a heavy object. Nothing was stolen and no arrests had been made.

This brought the number of elderly women killed in the province since Thursday to three, said Janse van Rensburg.

One was attacked with a butcher's knife at her home in Gwabeni on Saturday. She was 82. The second woman, aged 83, died in hospital in Centane after a man, who had accused her of witchcraft, stabbed her on Thursday.

Eastern Cape human settlements MEC Helen Sauls-August said the attack on elderly women in the province was “unforgivable”.

“We appeal to all families living with elderly people not to leave them alone and vulnerable to attacks. We must make sure that our elderly are not left alone or with strangers,” she said. - Sapa
