Machubeni, Eastern Cape - An elderly woman has been raped and murdered near Lady Frere, north of Queenstown in the Eastern Cape, police said on Monday.

The 71-year-old woman's body was found in a river in Machubeni by two boys around noon on Saturday, said Lieutenant Pumzile Makaula. The boys went to the police.

The woman had apparently left her home around 9am to attend a funeral.

She had been stabbed in the head and police believed she had been raped, said Makaula. - Sapa
