Empangeni – An Empangeni man was sentenced to 25 years behind bars for raping a five-year-old girl more than six years ago, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

Police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala said the 51-year-old man was sentenced by the Empangeni Regional Court on Thursday and had already spent nine months in jail after his arrest in October last year.

“During January 2010, a five-year-old victim was on her way to school when the accused grabbed her and took her to his house and raped her. The victim was threatened to be killed should she tell anyone,” said Gwala.

“It was discovered by the victim’s teacher, when she noticed that the victim was not feeling well that was when the victim broke her silence and the case of rape was registered at Empangeni police in July 2015.”
