Bloemfontein -

More than 30 vehicles seized and stored as exhibits in police investigations were destroyed in a fire at Ficksburg, police said on Thursday.

Spokesman Captain Phumelelo Dhlamini said 32 vehicles were burned out.

No one was injured.

Dhlamini said the fire started at about 6pm on Wednesday.

Police received a call from residents that the Ficksburg police exhibit camp, a field enclosed by a high fence, was on fire.

When police arrived, several vehicles were already on fire.

“One vehicle after another was catching fire quickly because the wind was blowing strongly.”

Police were investigating information that two men were seen near the camp before the vehicles were set alight.

It was alleged when the first vehicle caught fire they ran towards the Caledon River, which divides South Africa and Lesotho.

Police were investigating a case of malicious damage to property. - Sapa
