Cape Town - Former Springbok and Canadian international rugby player Christian Stewart appeared in court on Monday on charges of theft and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

The charges stem from an alleged assault on Stewart’s ex-wife’s boyfriend and the disappearance of a cellphone during the incident.

On Tuesday, police liaison officer Captain FC van Wyk confirmed Hout Bay police were investigating the charges.

Stewart, 47, born in Toronto, Canada, is a former centre who played internationally for Canada and South Africa. Between the two countries he earned 17 caps – 14 with Canada and three with the Boks.

He was arrested on February 5 and released on a warning.

During the court appearance on Monday, Stewart’s lawyer, Derek Wille, said he was preparing to take the matter to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
