Cape Town - Former Laingsburg deputy mayor Bertie van As has found himself in hot water following claims that he assaulted a 13-year-old boy for allegedly breaking into his son’s house.

The minor’s family has opened a case against Van As, alleging he choked the boy and lifted him up, before shoving him against his car.

Police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie has confirmed Laingsburg police are investigating a common assault case against an adult male.

Pojie said a burglary complaint was reported in the area. He said no one had been arrested in connection with the assault and the investigation was continuing.

He said the stolen items, including a laptop, were found at the minor’s home.

“Once the investigation is completed, the docket will be sent to the state prosecutor to decide on whether or not to prosecute the suspect.”

Alexander Williams, a family friend of the minor, who witnessed the incident at the weekend said the minor and his grandfather were on their way to the police station when Van As allegedly assaulted the boy. Van As allegedly stopped his car next to the boy and his grandfather, demanding that they get into his car.

“The boy refused because he was on his way to the police station with his grandfather. It was at that point where Van As choked the minor and lifted him up in the air, before shoving him against the car,” said Williams.

Williams said the incident ended with the boy and his grandfather getting into Van As’s car, fearing what would happen next.

Van As has confirmed being contacted by the police to make a statement.
