A man accused of the graveyard killing of Welkom resident Michael van Eck has appeared in the Virginia circuit court.
Former Rustenburg mayor Matthew Wolmarans confessed to another prisoner that he orchestrated the killing of town councillor Moss Phakoe, the SABC reported on Thursday.
Emmanuel Masuku, who was in the Brits police cells with Wolmarans, told the Mahikeng High Court sitting in Rustenburg that he noticed Wolmarans was having trouble sleeping and had lost his appetite.
Masuku said Wolmarans then told him he had paid two hitmen R80,000 each to kill Phakoe.
Wolmarans, who stands accused alongside his former driver Enoch Matshaba, was released on R50,000 bail in November.
Earlier this week, the charges against two men accused of Phakoe's murder were dismissed over lack of evidence to link them to the crime.
Phakoe was killed in the driveway of his home in Rustenburg north on March 13, 2009, after putting up ANC posters for the national election.
He was found slumped over the steering wheel of his car and had two bullet wounds. The driver's window of the car was shattered.
He was killed shortly after he handed in a report about corruption in the Rustenburg municipality. - Sapa
