When former TV personality Zanele Mbokazi received a call from two Rosebank detectives demanding R10 000 to stop them from investigating her, she obliged.

She flew from Durban and arranged to meet the policeman and policewoman at the Campus Square shopping centre in Melville at 9pm on Sunday to make the payment.

But when she handed over the bag of money to the two, their colleagues from the Hawks were right there to take the money and arrest the sergeant and the lieutenant.

The officers, aged 35 and 42, now face charges of bribery and corruption. They were expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

On Monday night, Mbokazi said she had been advised not to talk to the media.

Speaking from her Durban office, where she runs events company Mirror PR, she said: “I can confirm that the police officers had requested for me to give them money, and a sting was set up with the Organised Crime Unit of the police and the Hawks.”

Mbokazi, who is the founder of the Crown Gospel Awards, was the face of the SABC1 show Gospel Gold.

She was also a household name on radio station UkhoziFM, where she was known as MaZet-zet for her talkshows and other programmes with the youth.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou said on Monday the two officers had allegedly threatened Mbokazi by saying they had “damning criminal evidence against her”.

“They ordered her to pay them R10 000 for them not to go ahead with the investigation,” explained Ndou.

He said that when Mbokazi received the call, she co-operated, but phoned the police, and a trap was set.

“Members of the Hawks observed the meeting, but pounced when the two suspects left the restaurant and still had the money in their possession,” Ndou said.

According to the SA Police Act, once an officer was arrested, he or she was suspended until released on bail. - The Star

Well done! About time corrupt cops gets arrested. They should get long sentences to prevent other cops from trying to do the same. Some idiots are more concerned about what she did instead of being proud of here for standing up to these blackmailing criminals in uniform.

I hope the law will run its course and these 2 SAPS members fired immedietely and not given their salaries whether they are out on bail or not. They were caught in the act.If this is not done, then I have absolutely no faith or trust in the South African law and police force.Too many SAPS menbers have gotten away with unlawfull activities and are receiving salaries regardless of what they have done. Why is the GVMT allwing this to happen. Is it because they are Africans and the less they get locked up the better as they probably are ANC members and no one in the so called GVMT want to fire and jail there own.To the public.Say what you like,I dont care. How can one expect to live in peace if others, esoecially THE saps are committing fraud, money laundering, theft etc.Old police uniforms are being sold to outsiders and or given away for the sole pupise of breaking the law. What is being done about this?? What a digusting GVMT.RThe new Slogan is as follows:Commit the crime and you will not do the time. What a wake up call.Comments please!!!

Excellent move Ma-Zet. I can no longer be bothered what the allegations against her were but I see a sense of not being threatned that she is being investigated in the first place. for me it gives hope that she is clean.

@DollyT yes corruption is a 'thing' in SA, however why focus on the negative? By reading the article did you not comprehend that it took the action of an upstanding concerned citizen, who was approached by these individuals did the RIGHT thing and contacted the correct police department. They then proceeded to do the RIGHT thing and arrested the perpetrators! Do you honestly think all policemen are corrupt? I guess the statistics that you read points to the fact that SA has become totally unliveable, with general anarchy, people running around in the streets constantly dodging bullets and armed tanks! Do you know who gives SA a bad name that allows corruption to foster?..people like you who choose to focus on the negative and not seeing the positive side of the story!
