Cape Town - A Mitchells Plain teenager was raped after being tricked into meeting a man who pretended to be a woman on Facebook, police said.

Police spokesman Frederick van Wyk said the 18-year-old agreed to meet the person in Mitchells Plain.

During the Facebook chats the teenager was under the impression it was a female.

“They had planned to meet each other at a shopping mall in Mitchells Plain but the suspect later changed the venue to the Mitchells Plain taxi rank. They met each other, got into a taxi and went to Tafelsig,” Van Wyk said.

The attacker then took the girl into the bush and raped her, he said.

In April last year the so-called “Facebook rapist” Thabo Bester’s 50-year jail term was reduced to 30 years on appeal.

He became known as the “Facebook rapist” after it emerged he used Facebook to lure young women.

Bester, 25, pleaded guilty to raping and robbing two women he lured to Durban with promises of modelling photo shoots. He was sentenced to 50 years by the Durban Regional Court in October 2011.

Bester was also sentenced in the Western Cape High Court to life last May for the murder of Joburg model Nomfundo Tyhulu.
