Four suspects, pretending to work for Pick n Pay’s bakery section robbed the Pick n Pay in the Tramshed shopping centre of R250 000 in cash on Thursday.
The men, who are still at large, walked into the store on the corner of Pretorius and Lilian Ngoyi (formerly van der Walt) streets, posing as bakery personnel, and ordered staff to open the safe at gunpoint.
According to Pretoria Central police, the robbers put the money in large bags and stole the employees’ cellphones before hijacking the bakery vehicle and speeding off.
They dumped the van on the corner of Johannes Ramokhoase (formerly Proes) and Du Toit streets and loaded the money into two getaway vehicles, a Mercedes Benz Vito and a panel van.
CCTV footage shows the vehicles travelling west on WF Nkomo Street (formerly Church) in the direction of Atteridgeville, where they are presumed to be hiding.
The police are looking for the suspects and say “arrests are imminent”.
The store confirmed the robbery but declined to provide details, saying they did not communicate with the media directly.
They referred the matter to their Joburg office, where the phones went unanswered.
